WELCOME

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,

who heals all our brokenness,

whose mercy extends beyond our imagination. Amen.

In courage, let us trust God with the truth of our shortcomings.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Gracious God, have mercy on us.

There are times when we try to honor you,

but instead make judgements against our neighbor.

We hide our fears, resentments, and insecurities,

choosing conflict and competition instead of vulnerable reconciliation.

In our desire to be first, we make distinctions among ourselves,

and we neglect the needs of the poor and suffering.

In your great mercy, forgive us our sins.

Draw near to us with grace in times of need.

Make us braver followers of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God promises to forgive our iniquity and to remember our sin no more.

By grace you have been freed!

In the name of ☩ Jesus Christ, the source of eternal healing, your sins are forgiven. Amen.

CONGREGATION SONG Make Me A Servant

Make me a servant, humble and meek; Lord let me lift up those who are weak

And may the prayer of my heart always be

Make me a servant, make me a servant, make me a servant today

(repeat)

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray. Sovereign God, you turn your greatness into goodness for all the peoples on earth. Shape us into willing servants of your kingdom, and make us desire always and only your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

WORD
God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song

FIRST READING Isaiah 53:4-12

This reading is from the last of four passages in Isaiah that are often called “servant songs.” Christians are probably most familiar with this servant song. In light of Christian faith, the servant’s healing ministry and redemptive suffering are understood to be fulfilled in the life and death of Christ.

A reading from Isaiah

4Surely he has borne our infirmities
and carried our diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
5But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.
6All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
8By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future?
For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people.
9They made his grave with the wicked
and his tomb with the rich,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10Yet it was the will of the Lord
to crush him with pain.
When you make his life
an offering for sin,
he shall see his offspring,
and shall prolong his days;
through him the will of the Lord
shall prosper.
11Out of his anguish he shall see light;
he shall find satisfaction
through his knowledge.
The righteous one, my servant,
shall make many righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12Therefore I will allot him a portion
with the great, and he shall divide
the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out himself
to death, and was numbered
with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.

Word of God, word of life.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL Mark 10:35-45

On the way to Jerusalem the disciples ask Jesus to grant them seats of honor. Jesus responds by announcing that he and his followers will “rule” through self-giving service.

The Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.

35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” 37And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SONG Will You Let Me Be Your Servant ELW 659

Verse 1:

Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you?
pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too

Verse 2:

We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road

We are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load

Verse 3:

I will hold the Christlight for you in the nighttime of your fear

I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear

Verse 4:

I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you

I will share your joy and sorrow till we’ve seen this journey through.

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

O Lord Hear My Prayer
O Lord hear my prayer, O Lord hear my prayer; when I call answer me
O Lord hear my prayer, O Lord hear my prayer; come and listen to me

Challenged by God’s Word in Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and the whole creation.

Holy One, we give thanks for all servant leaders of the church. Ground in your love all bishops, pastors, and deacons, as well as lay leaders and council members, and inspire them to ministry that challenges, engages, and comforts those in their care.

Creative One, we give thanks for the delicate balance of the natural world. Kindle in us a spirit of caring strength in the preservation of habitats, food availability, and centers of refuge. Nurture lands and peoples in need of healing after natural disasters or human destruction.

Empowering One, fill the leaders of governments with a spirit of service that prioritizes those on the margins due to job loss, underemployment, unsafe working conditions, and immigration status. May economic equity be achieved for all people, and may all voices be heard.

Restoring One, send your angels to watch over, rescue, and protect those who are injured or ill. Nurse those who suffer hardship, disease, injury, or difficulty with your comfort and peace, especially Michael, Bill, Larry, Lou, Don, Bev, and Andrew, Gina, Michael, Al, Bev, all those affected by addiction or mental illness, and all military personnel and first responders.

Abiding One, you shepherd us toward faithful living as servants and followers of Jesus, placing us in right relationship. Teach us to bear one another’s burdens, and celebrate one another’s joys, as we celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary of Kristen and David McCordick with our altar flowers today.

Saving One, we give thanks for the disciples James and John and all saints who faithfully served you. We remember their lives as we remember Tripp Sutherland through altar flowers given today by Jamie Sutherland. We rejoice in a promised place at the feast of victory that we receive by your grace alone.

Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray,

trusting in the saving grace you freely give, both now and forever. Amen.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you all. And also with you.

MEAL
God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ

DIALOGUE

The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE

Generous Love, you set the table long and wide and beautiful, with places not just for us alone, but for everyone, saints and sinners of all times and places. For you know how much we need each other, how much the consolation of company means to us, how good it is to join the present and the past. You know how much deeper the love, sharper the vision, more complete the memory, and more authentic the witness is when we are not alone. United as one community of faith, we join our voices on earth with the choirs of heaven, together singing our praise:

SANCTUS Holy, Holy Morrissey

(Women lead, Men echo)

Holy, holy, Lord God of power and might,

Holy, holy, Lord God of power and might

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory,

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord

Together:

Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

When Jesus calls his friends to eat, God’s Spirit searches far and wide;

she finds us all and brings us home side by side.

Holy God, in this communion, we are one:

One in the witness with those who testify to your healing presence,

your saving grace, your resurrection power.

One in the work you give us to be agents of reconciliation in this world of polarization.

One in your worship, announcing your good news of all-inclusive love in word and deed.

Holy God, in this communion, we are one:

One in the community of disciples, who overcome fear through faith,

who allow the truth about ourselves to make us free.

One in the community of freedom fighters, whose courage defeats the strongholds of injustice.

One in the community of believers, whose loving relationships make this communion holy.

Holy God, in this communion, we are one.

As one body of Christ, we remember that in the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Trusting in the promise of grace, we confess the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again!

Generous giver of life, pour out your Spirit on these gifts of food and drink.

Make them for us the very presence of Jesus, so that as we receive and share them,

we become peace builders, justice makers, and love bearers.

Let us become courageous community! Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray as Jesus taught us, each in the words or language of our choice.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Come to this table, in the presence of your neighbor. Together, taste and see.

For in this bread and cup, you are fully known and fully loved by God!

COMMUNION

At this table, Christ is both host and meal, and offers himself to all who hunger and thirst for his presence.

We believe that he is truly present in this sacrament.

Come to the front, where bread is placed in your hand (you can request a gluten-free wafer), and where you receive wine by taking a cup from the tray (the cups in the center contain white grape juice).

If you do not wish to commune, you are welcome to come forward and receive a blessing.

If you need to receive communion in your seat, simply notify an usher.

No one is too young to receive this sacrament, though some families wish to give their children some instruction before they take their first communion. If a young child accompanies you, please indicate to the pastor whether they should receive bread or a blessing.

James of Jerusalem, martyr, died around 62

Wednesday, October 23, 2024

One of three early-church leaders named James, this man is identified in the New Testament and by a historian of the time as a brother of Jesus. Scholars are uncertain whether this means a blood brother. He was a leader of the church in Jerusalem.

Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647;
Paul Gerhardt, died 1676; hymnwriters

Saturday, October 26, 2024

These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote “O Morning Star, how fair and bright” and “Wake, awake, for night is flying.” Heermann’s hymns, including “Ah, holy Jesus,” often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest Lutheran hymnwriter, was a pastor in Berlin.
