If I were one of our country’s early settlers heading west I’d never have reached the Ohio River. I would have ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. I have a terrible sense of direction. A compass in the car doesn’t help nor do maps. I can read them but my brain doesn’t get which way to go…
But now, I can go anywhere. My new car has a fantastic GPS. It talks to me and there are a few words and bold lines with arrows on my steering column that show the way to go. I get it!
Going to church is like using a GPS. In life I do not always know which way to go. The directions to get someplace are not clear. If you are really lost Jesus finds you. He is the Good Shepherd and He seeks us out! If you want to get back into your relationship with Him God waits with open arms just like the father of the Prodigal Son. But what about those smaller daily decisions? What’s the right thing to do or best way to go? I have always found direction and sometimes very explicit guidance by going to church. God speaks through: conversations with people, words from Scripture readings, words in songs, sermons, stained glass windows, and many other particular ways. I know what to do. I get what I need. Find a church. Make it a habit to be part of a community so that you get directions for life’s journey. Try it! You’ll see the way a little more clearly.
